Out of society’s mind, the mentally ill in Kerala’s government mental health centres yearn for compassion

The inmates of State-run mental health centres in Kerala are living in abominable conditions. Acute shortage of staff and facilities plagues Government Mental Health Centre, Thrissur. Fifty-five inmates in the Thiruvananthapuram centre and around 40 in Thrissur are fit to be discharged. Yet, with no one to take them home or no place to go, they continue to live in the centres. Relapses have forced some others to return to the cells
